Workshop 02: Media Literacy for Democratic Resilience: Global Perspectives, Policy Innovation and Youth Empowerment
14. November 2026
14:30 - 16:00
GMK-Fachgruppe Global Media Literacy, Kooperationspartner: klicksafe
Abstract: Media literacy has evolved from a set of media-related, digital competencies into a fundamental life skill and democratic value. In an era shaped by disinformation, artificial intelligence, social media influence and overlapping global crises, media literacy offers a holistic framework for strengthening democratic participation, critical thinking and social resilience. This interactive workshop explores global perspectives on media education, drawing on international policies and hands-on experience by UNESCO and different European initiatives.
Central to the discussion will be the question: What kind of information do young people want and need? Rather than relying on restrictive approaches, the workshop advocates meaningful youth engagement, participatory learning and interdisciplinary collaboration. It will highlight evidence-based practices from the Global South and Europe and showcase innovative examples from Greece on creative media literacy and lifelong learning. Participants will have the opportunity to test the methods demonstrated in a short hands-on phase. The workshop will conclude by putting forward four strategic imperatives for future media education for a joint discussion: How can we embed media literacy as a cornerstone of democratic resilience in the digital age?
